Having joined many of his World Cup winning compatriots at Barcelona in the summer, Spain star David Villa is targeting even more silverware this season.

Despite enjoying World Cup and European Championship success with Spain in recent years, David Villa only has two Copa del Rey winners’ medals to show for his efforts at club level. That all looks set to change this season, however, with the 28-year-old signing for Barcelona in a £35 million deal in May, joining many of his national team colleagues – not to mention World Player of the Year Lionel Messi – to complete a mouth watering line-up at the Nou Camp.

Q. How is life at Barcelona?

A. All good so far. My family are settled in a great city and that’s important. I knew a lot of the players from the Spanish team and they were telling me about the club at the World Cup. It didn’t feel like I was joining a new club as a stranger because not only did I know them as people, I knew them as players too. But it was still a big deal to arrive. A big crowd was waiting to greet me and everybody has been very welcoming. I’m also happy with how things have started on the pitch, at my performances and the tactics of the team, but it’s still early. I’ll be judged at the end of the season on how many goals I’ve scored and how many trophies we have won.

Q.Will Barca win the Champions League this season?

A. We hope so, but we know how difficult it will be. You’re playing against the best teams in Europe, the best players. In a league you can usually recover from mistakes. In the Champions League knock outs that’s harder. I know how hard it is just to reach the Champions League because of my time with Valencia. We considered it a great honour just to get there. At Barca it’s different, it would be a major scandal if the team was not in the Champions League.

Q. Barca are favourites to win the competition…

A. All I know is thatwe have a very, very good team here. We have excellent players in every position and a wonderful coach. The players are experienced and successful. This is a club geared towards winning every competition we enter. Barca won all six trophies they entered in 2009, but as the players saw in the Champions League last season, you don’t win anything just because you are the favourites.

Q. What’s more important to you – winning Spain’s Primera Liga or getting your hands on the Champions League trophy?

A. I’ve never won either, so any would be perfect. The players here say that the priority is always towin the league and anything else that follows is a bonus.

Q. Which other teams do you see as Barca’s main challengers in Europe this season?

A. The usual ones. We have to respect Internazionale because they are the holders. They do not play pretty football and it was a surprise that they knocked Barca out last season, but the record books will only remember the winners. Chelsea are the strongest English team; the champions. They’ve had some great battles with Barca and maybe there will be more. I played against Chelsea when at Valencia and they were probably the toughest team that I ever played in Europe. They have experience and strength and a determination to win the Champions League for the first time. Frank Lampard is a player I really admire. Manchester [United] are always there – they are the main two English teams who are always difficult to play against.
